1/18/1968The Resolution on Official Languages was passed by both the houses of the Parliament wherin the need to formulate a more intensive and comprehensive programme for the progressive use of Hindi for Official purposes, preparing annual assessment report for reviewing the progress, formulating a programme for the co-ordinated development of the other languages included in the 8th schedule alongwith Hindi, adopting of a tri-langual formula, making the knowledge of either Hindi or English compulsory for recruitment to the services of the Union, and inclusion of all the languages of the 8th schedule of the Constitution and English as the optional medium for the exams conducted by the union Public Service Commission at the appropriate time, has been stressed.

Indira Gandhi, the only daughter of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the granddaughter of a statesman, has been elected president of the Congress party in India. Mrs. Gandhi will be installed into her new office next Sunday, and her job is not expected to be an easy one. The Congress party has been wracked by internal dissension and has been on the verge of collapse. It is hoped that Mrs. Gandhi, who is 41, will breath some new life into the party. Most of the politicians who have been arguing about the future of their party and country are fairly old. Mrs. Gandhi, who is known for her leftist sentiments, is expected to act quickly to put her own mark on party policies.
3/2/1949Sarojini Naidu, ""Nightingale of India"", freedom fighter, social worker and patriot, passed away when she was the Governor of Uttar Pradesh. She also holds a place of pride among the women freedom fighters of India. She presided over the Kanpur session of Indian National Congress. She took active part in Salt Satyagraha and represented Indian women in Round Table Conference, London, 1931.
