Historical Event on 4/13/1919

Jallianwala Baug massacre. The great Indian tragedy occured in Amritsar which claimed 389 lives and wounded 1,516 activitists fighting for Indian independence. Early in 1919, the Rowlatt Act (Black Act) was passed. This authorized the Government to imprison any person without any trial and conviction in a court of law. This furious act was under the guidence of cruel Brigedier General R. E. H. Dyer and his 50 men troop. Michael O' Dwyer was then the Governor of Punjab who naturally defended the action. This day is observed as Jallianwala Baug Day.

7/29/1987India and Sri Lanka sign peace accord at Colombo in a bid to end the 5-year old ethnic trouble. This stance taken thereafter by the LTTE added several dimensions to the scenario. It was a multi-purpose role that the Navy has been required to play.
6/28/1972Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis died. He was the first founder of Indian statistical Institute to receive world recognition. In 1958, he started his national sample surveys. A Sample survey means assessing a situation by studying a part of it which would represent the whole, some of his proposals were included in the second five year paln. His original work made him elected as fellow of the Royal society in 1945.

2/4/1974Satyendra Nath Bose, a noted mathematician, professor and physicist, passed away at Calcutta. He contributed greatly to statictical mechanics, the electromagnetic properties of ionosphere, the therories of X-ray crystallography and thermoluminescence, and unified field theory. Bose instituted ""Planck's Law and the Hypothesis of Light Quana"" in 1924.
