Seattle To Kelowna (Canada, BC)

Kelowna is small beautiful city in BC, Kelowna. Kelowna is located on Okanagan Lake in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Canada. It derives its name from a native term for "grizzly bear".
We had heard about Kelowna from a friend who lives in Vancouver. A little bit research on the internet showed that this city might be worth visiting.
However, about 6 hours drive from Seattle was a little bit over the comfort zone (though I did a 20 hours drive when I was young). Now with a 21 old month's kid it seemed like a very long drive. But the lure of visiting a cool place motivated me to take this trip.
Getting to Kelowna
Kelowna is located east of Vancouver. So we hopped on I-5 and drove towards Canada. There are two border crossings, Aldergrove BC - Lynden Washington or Abbottsford BC - Sumas Washington that will get you across the border towards Kelowna. We took the Lynden one but stopped, at a city called, Abbotsford, very close to US-Canada border. This city has some very good Indian restaurants and inexpensive Indian DVDs and CDs stores. How could we not stop there? The tasty Indian food, Chole bhature and Gobhi Paratas were amazing. If you do decide to go to Kelowna make sure to stop in Abbotsford.
From Abbotsford we took the highway 1, which lead us to highway 5 and then to 97 west that finally lead us to Kelowna. We arrived in Kelowna about 7.5 hours after we left Seattle (include a stop in Abbotsford).
It is advisable to have a full tank of gas as you drive from Abbotsford to Kelowna because there is a long stretch over the mountains where you won't find any town or any gas stations.
The roads are curvy with beautiful mountains. Most of the roads are wide enough to have a comfortable drive through those mountains. On a nice day you will get some cool views. If you are afraid of heights then this drive might not be for you.
Kelowna is located on Lake Okanagan. As soon as we entered the city we saw a huge lake with blue shiny water that filled us with joy. Further into the city, on the lake shores there was live music playing with lots of people having fun. The streets were very lively and everybody seemed to be enjoying. It was Canada day. We had 4 days of fun in Kelowna. Good food, relaxing atmosphere, live music and sun.

- In the science fiction television series Stargate SG-1, Jonas Quinn hails from the nation of Kelowna on the planet Langara.
- Some people believe that a lake monster named Ogopogo lives in Lake Okanagan.
- In the song "Driving One of Your Cars" a Swedish musician Lisa Miskovsky, mentions Kelowna "Kelowna is beautiful in summertime they say".
- Fido, a comedy/horror/thriller movie about zombies, was filmed in Kelowana
- Part of the movie "Mee Shee: The Water Giant" was filmed in Kelowna.
- Part of the movies Shred, and Shred 2 were filmed at Big White, a ski hill near Kelowna.
